Surplus Computer Property
Objectives
- To redeploy existing university computers before they become obsolete.
- To safely and efficiently dispose of obsolete computers and/or hazardous electronic equipment.
- To ensure that sensitive data does not leave the university and verify that certificates of destruction have been issued for every surplus computer.
Policy
- Computers are university property, not department property.
- Mark on cases or monitors with pencil only—no markers, stencils, paint, stickers, or other non-removable markings.
- Do not cannibalize computers.
- Remove BIOS passwords.
- Hard drives do not need to be wiped; computer surplus will perform this function.
- Send all non-functional or replaced parts to surplus for disposal. Computer parts and electronic components are considered hazardous waste and have specific disposal requirements.
- Send boxes back complete, including but not limited to:
